Parent Task: [M3.3] Key Concepts & Terminology
Depends on: [M3.1] MoB3 Base Frameworks
What This Document Is
The MoB3 glossary defines MoB3-native strategic concepts. For terms that originate in the BUFM financial layer or commercial models, this document acts as a reference index — linking to the authoritative definition in the source repo.
Single source of truth rule: If a term is defined in emob-financial-models or emob-commercial-models, that definition is authoritative. This glossary references it — it does not duplicate it.
A. MoB3 Generational Framework
| Term |
Definition |
| MoB1 |
Mobility 1.0 — internal combustion engine + mass production (c. 1908–present). Centralized manufacturing, fossil fuel dependency, linear asset lifecycle, high barriers to entry. |
| MoB2 |
Mobility 2.0 — electric drive + battery technology (c. 2010–present). Solved the powertrain but not the ownership structure. Characterized by BaaS lock-in, platform-controlled fleets, and concentrated wealth. |
| MoB3 |
Mobility 3.0 — decentralized, accessible, generative mobility. Full-spectrum electrification with genuine asset ownership, distributed energy, open ecosystems, and local value retention. |
| Asset Lifecycle |
The three-phase economic life of a MoB3 asset: Finance (acquisition) → Service (operation + maintenance) → Residual Value (second life + recycling). |
| Leapfrog |
The developing world's advantage: skip MoB2's centralized subscription models entirely and go directly from MoB1 to MoB3. |
B. Ecosystem Participants
| Term |
BUFM Layer |
Definition |
| Operator |
VOR |
The end-user who owns and operates the mobility asset. Not a "rider," "driver," or "customer" — an asset operator who participates in the ecosystem as an owner, not a subscriber. Replaces the term "Rider" in BUFM for MoB3 context. |
| Battery Operator |
BCS |
Entity that finances, deploys, and manages battery fleets. May be OVES, a third-party financier, or a cooperative. Revenue from swap service fees and carbon credits. |
| Network Agent |
SNS |
Local entrepreneur who operates swap/charge stations. Low-barrier franchise model. Revenue from transparent split of swap fees. Community-anchored. |
| Power Provider |
EPS |
Entity that generates and sells electricity to the network. May be a solar microgrid operator, a national utility, or an individual operator with home solar feeding surplus to the grid. |
| Assembler |
— (commercial) |
Local manufacturer/assembler producing vehicles and batteries from imported or locally-sourced components. Open-standard components. |
| Financier |
— (financing layer) |
Entity providing capital for asset acquisition. In MoB3: tokenized RWA enables fractional, distributed financing — not a single bank. |
C. BUFM → MoB3 Terminology Bridge
| BUFM Term |
MoB3 Term |
Notes |
| VOR (Vehicle Owner Rider) |
Operator Layer |
In MoB3, the "rider" is an operator who owns the asset, not just a rider who pays for service. |
| BCS (Battery Circulation Service) |
Battery Layer |
Same function; MoB3 adds the asset lifecycle dimension (degradation → second life → recycling). |
| SNS (Swap Network Service) |
Network Layer |
Same function; MoB3 differentiates Agent Stations from OVES Stations and enables multi-provider competition. |
| EPS (Electric Power Service) |
Energy Layer |
Same function; MoB3 adds solar home-charging as a first-class energy source, not just grid/genset. |
| DS (Demand-Supply Hub) |
Market Layer |
MoB3 envisions DS as an open market protocol where multiple providers compete, not a single-entity optimizer. |
| FFD (Financial Flow Document) |
Smart Contract Layer |
FFD is the static specification; MoB3 smart contracts are the executable implementation. |
| EED (Economic Event Document) |
On-Chain Event |
EED is the accounting artifact; MoB3 records economic events as on-chain transactions. |
D. MoB3 Design Principles (P1–P7)
| ID |
Principle |
Short Definition |
| P1 |
Asset Lifecycle Ownership |
Control across the asset's entire economic life: finance → service → residual value. |
| P2 |
Energy Sovereignty |
Operator can generate own energy or purchase from competitive market. No single fuel gatekeeper. |
| P3 |
Transparent, Programmatic Economics |
Smart-contract governed payments. Auditable. No hidden fees. Full TCO knowable before purchase. |
| P4 |
Open, Interoperable Ecosystem |
Standards-based hardware. Open parts. Multiple providers on same platform. No lock-in. |
| P5 |
Distributed Value Creation |
Wealth retained locally at every layer: assembly, agent ops, solar, recycling, carbon credits. |
| P6 |
Low Barriers, Dignified Participation |
PAYG path to ownership. Resale market. Voluntary participation, dignified exit. |
| P7 |
Full-Spectrum Ambition |
Framework scales from 2W → 3W → cars → trucks → boats. Same principles, different parameters. |
E. Financing & Ownership
| Term |
Definition |
| PAYG (Pay-As-You-Go) |
Daily or weekly payment model where each payment builds equity toward full ownership. Distinct from lease-to-own (which often has balloon payments or never reaches ownership). |
| Tokenized RWA (Real-World Asset) |
A battery or vehicle represented as a blockchain token. Enables fractional ownership, verifiable history, and programmatic revenue distribution. |
| Path-to-Ownership |
The defined schedule by which PAYG payments convert to equity. Must have a finite endpoint. |
| Residual Value |
The verifiable market value of an asset at any point in its lifecycle. In MoB3, this is on-chain and auditable — not a proprietary estimate by the financing company. |
| Second Life |
Post-vehicle use of a battery for stationary storage (home, microgrid, commercial). Extends asset value beyond mobility. |
| Recycling Credit |
Value recovered from battery materials at end-of-life. Priced into acquisition cost in MoB3. |
| CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) |
Cost to acquire one operator. In MoB3: agent network + digital onboarding, target < $50 per operator. |
| ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) |
Monthly revenue per operator. In MoB3: swap/charge fees + service plans + carbon credits. |
F. Geographic & Market Terms
| Term |
Definition |
| Geographic Output |
A market-specific deliverable (pricing model, whitepaper, project plan) that applies MoB3 strategic + BUFM financial layers to a specific country or region. |
| TAM (Total Addressable Market) |
The full universe of potential operators in a market. For MoB3: all ICE vehicle operators who would benefit economically from switching to electric. |
| SAM (Serviceable Addressable Market) |
The subset of TAM reachable with current infrastructure and financing capacity. |
| SOM (Serviceable Obtainable Market) |
Realistic short-term capture target given competitive landscape and deployment rate. |
| NWOW (New Way of Working) |
OVES's Kenya market entry strategy. Distinct from a simple "deployment plan" — NWOW implies a fundamentally different operator relationship model. |
G. Operations & Deployment
| Term |
Definition |
| Swap Station |
A physical location where operators exchange depleted batteries for charged ones. In MoB3: standardized bays, interoperable batteries, agent-operated or OVES-operated. |
| Agent Station |
Swap station operated by a local entrepreneur under a franchise/revenue-share model. Lower CapEx for OVES, higher local value retention. |
| OVES Station |
Swap station fully owned and operated by OVES. Higher CapEx, full revenue retention. |
| Energy Bundle |
Prepaid kWh packages sold to operators. Bart's model: 1/15/60 swap-equivalent bundles at different battery capacities. Market-facing pricing product, not a BUFM concept. |
| Channel Pricing |
Three-tier pricing structure: Distributor → Dealer → Retail. Each tier has defined margin. Bart's commercial innovation. |
| Landed Cost |
Total cost of an imported component: FOB + import duty + freight + clearance. Single source of truth across all BUFM models. |
| Battery SOC (State of Charge) |
Current charge level as percentage of capacity. Used operationally. |
| Battery SOH (State of Health) |
Current capacity as percentage of original capacity. Used for residual value assessment. Critical MoB3 parameter — must be on-chain and verifiable. |
H. Economic & Financial
| Term |
BUFM Parameter |
Definition |
| **\(/tkm** (\) per ton-kilometer) |
Cross-BUFM |
The universal transport efficiency metric: cost to move one ton of payload over one kilometer. Industry standard in logistics, freight, and transport economics. Electric drivetrains are 2-20x lower $/tkm than ICE — this is the economic bedrock of MoB3 (see P0 in premises). |
| **\(/pkm** (\) per passenger-kilometer) |
Cross-BUFM |
Passenger equivalent of $/tkm: cost to move one passenger over one kilometer. Used for public transit, ride-hailing, and passenger vehicle economics. |
| LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) |
EPS_LCOE |
All-in cost per kWh from a power source, including CapEx amortization, OpEx, and fuel. |
| TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) |
Cross-BUFM |
All costs across the asset lifecycle: acquisition + energy + maintenance + financing − residual value. |
| Swap Fee |
Swap_Price_Day |
Daily rate for unlimited swaps. In MoB3: market-set, not monopoly-set. |
| Utilization Rate |
Utilization_Rate |
Fraction of installed capacity actively in use. Key efficiency metric at every layer. |
| Integer Unit Constraint |
SCALE_FACTOR |
Physical infrastructure expands in discrete units (10 batteries, 15-slot racks, 120kW power blocks). Creates unavoidable slack. |
| Cascade Constraint |
— |
A hard limit that flows upstream through BUFM layers. Example: VOR 30% savings → BCS max swap price $0.80/day → SNS overhead < $0.40/kWh/day → EPS LCOE < $0.32/kWh. |
| Partner P&L |
— |
Cross-BUFM profit-and-loss statement showing revenue allocation across ecosystem participants. Bart's 40/60 OVES/Partner split is an instance. |
I. Competitor & Market Intelligence
| Term |
Definition |
| BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) |
The dominant MoB2 model: operator buys the vehicle shell, battery is perpetually rented. Swap fees are mandatory and indefinite. |
| Swap-Only Model |
BaaS variant where no home charging is permitted. Operator is 100% dependent on provider's network. Ampersand, Spiro (Africa). |
| Proprietary Lock-in |
When a battery, charging interface, or service network is designed to prevent interoperability. Switching cost = 100% of asset value. |
| Carbon Credit Arbitrage |
Practice of capturing carbon credits from operator activity without sharing revenue with operators. Spiro's documented model. |
| Tied Selling |
Legal concept: forcing purchase of one product (swap service) as condition of another (vehicle). Under review by Competition Authority of Kenya. |
| Full TCO Comparison |
MoB3 competitive tool: compare all-in lifecycle cost (energy + maintenance + financing + residual value), not just "per-km energy cost." |
